The newspaper pack has been designed for use at key stage 2 and 3 and aims to enhance the national curriculum through the use of original source material.
Use is made of transcriptions and photographs of Manchester’s newspapers from around 1900 and asks students to consider attitudes of the time and make comparisons between past and present.
Included is a concise history of the newspaper industry in Manchester during the Victorian period and an outline of the history of printing. There are many activities within the pack and suggestions for group activities and projects. The pack also includes timelines, suggested answers to questions, information for teachers and ideas for further individual and class activities.
This pack is part of a series of education packs developed from original resources held at Greater Manchester County Record Office. Other areas covered include Victorian Manchester and the Cotton Industry. Further material concerning Workhouses, Lunatic Asylums and Transport will be available in the near future.
